Vette
Vues is saddened to report that we have lost our friend and Vette Vues
contributor, Gary “Soupy” Campbell of Federal Way, Washington.
He passed
away January 14, 2009 at the Franciscan Hospice Center in Tacoma, WA.
He was told he had bone cancer in his back.
Soupy
covered Corvette events for Vette Vues in Washington, Oregon, California
and Nevada.
“Soupy”
and his wife Jan sold Corvette T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, lapel pins
and all sorts of Corvette related stuff at shows.
He created a business called
“Soupy’s Vette Stuff.”
Many of you might have bought his T-shirt out of Vette Vues
“Metal Cars Rot.”
“Soupy” also created many of the clubs event shirts of which he
attended.
Soupy
was one of those guys you just liked to be around.
He was never too busy to visit and always enjoyed a good laugh.
I read on a club blog “He
was always willing to help someone, even strangers because for Soupy, no
one was a stranger.”
This is a great description of the first time we met him at the Puyallup,
Washington show
in 2002.
He quickly made friends with us and tried to help as much as
possible.
By the end of the show, we felt like we had know him since we were
kids.
After
seeing him at various shows in the West, it was only natural to have
“Soupy” be the Vette Vues representative.
He has done a great job and will be greatly missed as a friend and
Vette Vues contributor.
He
loved Corvettes and was a member and past president of the Classical Glass
Corvette Club in Washington where I am sure he will be greatly missed.
“Soupy
was also a Marine Corp veteran and proud to be an Ameircan.
Soupy will have a full military service. Soupy and Jan
want friends attending the service to drive their Corvettes when that day
arrives. Cards, gifts and inquires can be mailed to Jan
Campbell, P.O. Box 26113, Federal Way, WA 98093-3113.
Whether
you know “Soupy” the Marine, Longshoreman, Corvette enthusiast or
friend, one thing is for sure, he will be greatly missed!
The
one thing “Soupy” did not like was to say goody-bye…so till we meet
again Soupy…
Our
thoughts and prayers are
with you Jan and your family during
this heartbreaking time. Please know that we feel your
loss and share in your sorrow.
