Our Feature Corvette was owned by Ed Foss and is a Fuel Injected 1965.  It was inducted into the Great Hall at Bloomington Gold in 2010.  The 1965 Fuel Injected Corvette was the first Expensive Collector Corvette.

In the mid-1970s, Sting Ray’s popularity exploded. Names like Bloomington, Vette Vues, McDorman, Buxbaum, and Krughoff were tossed around like cousins at a family reunion. The Corvette world was expanding its interest in “old” Corvettes and especially in the more authentically preserved and restored ones. In 1975, the term “old” meant 5-10 years old, or roughly 1965.

Richard Buxbaum began searching for and importing original unrestored Corvettes from all over the country to his shop in Hinsdale, Illinois, with the idea of marketing them to a growing clientele. It was a good idea.  Remember, the mid-1970s was not exactly the high point for new and fast Corvettes, so the market was ripe for the older high-performance cars. Although ’67 427s were good, fuelies were really the hot tickets. That’s when this “low mileage” green fuelie convertible was discovered in New York state. Buxbaum had it shipped to Hinsdale where Mike Hanson and Stretch Zimmerman prepared it for sale – Buxbaum style – at a very big price. Enter Jim Krughoff with a very big checkbook.

Days before the 1976 Bloomington show, word circulated around the country that someone just paid $40,000 for a 1,500-mile fuel-injected convertible. Nearly eight times its price brand new, ten years earlier.

This car represents a beautifully maintained high-performance Corvette from the 60s, but more importantly, it represents the launching point for high-dollar Corvettes that have continued for nearly four decades.
