GENERAL MOTORS

Our coverage of the 2014 SEMA show began with multiple cars presented by General Motors. It was both a surprise and an extravaganza. Of course, deciding which car to present first posed a problem. So, we decided to begin with the 2014 Blue Devil and follow up with several 2015 cars, a 2015 custom, and a 1971 LT1 custom.

BLUE DEVIL

Starting with a surprise reveal at their Monday evening opening reception, Chevrolet unveiled the restored 2009 Corvette ZR1 “Blue Devil.” The Blue Devil was one of two show cars used to introduce the all-new Corvette ZR1 in January 2008. But the car was damaged when a sinkhole developed beneath the National Corvette Museum on February 12, 2009. The ZR1, “Blue Devil,” was the first of the eight cars to be restored. It was on display at the 2014 SEMA Show before returning to the Bowling Green, Kentucky museum.

After a successful restoration process, the 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” prototype - the initial installment of the supercharged supercar-slayer from Chevrolet in 2008 - was revealed at the SEMA 2014 event, offering a legendary and memorable moment for all Corvette enthusiasts.

At SEMA 2014, the remarkable resurrection of the first victim of the sinkhole was unveiled: the renowned 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil prototype. It was the original supercharged model of the powerful Corvette that had been created in 2008.

Chevrolet wowed the audience by unveiling the newly-restored 2009 Corvette ZR1, the 'Blue Devil.' The car had been used to debut the new Corvette ZR1 back in January 2008, but unfortunately had been trapped by the infamous sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum in February 2009. Of the eight cars in the museum that were affected by the sinkhole, the Blue Devil was the first to be brought back to life, being proudly shown off at the 2014 SEMA Show before making its way back home to the museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

On Monday evening, Chevrolet delighted Corvette fans with a surprise reveal - the unveiling of the restored 2009 Corvette ZR1 "Blue Devil." This remarkable car was introduced alongside another in January 2008 and had an unfortunate run-in with a sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum on February 12, 2009. Being the first of eight cars to be restored, the "Blue Devil" made its grand return to the limelight at the 2014 SEMA Show before it headed back to its home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Miraculously, the Blue Devil was not heavily impacted compared to other Corvettes that got caught in the collapse, as it managed to start and move on its own power after being rescued from the deep abyss. It did sustain some damage though - such as a broken oil line, crushed rear control arms, cracked carbon-fiber bodywork and a broken windshield, headlight, and hood-window glass.

This Corvette was met with severe damage, from a cracked carbon-fiber ground effects and broken passenger-side rocker panel to a damaged passenger front fender and cracked windshield, hood window glass and passenger headlamp assembly. Even the rear control arms on the driver's side were bent, not to mention the cracked oil lines to the supercharged LS9 engine’s dry-sump oiling system.

After being lifted from the deep, 45x60ft cavern, the eight Vettes were put on display in the museum just as they had been unearthed from the sinkhole until September. Then, Chevrolet recovered the Blue Devil and conducted a complete restoration of it, resulting in its transformation to the former beauty it had been before its accidental fall. All this happened in merely six weeks.

After being carefully retrieved from a vast 45-by-60-foot chasm, the eight Corvettes were showcased at the museum in the same state they were discovered until September. Chevy then returned the Blue Devil to be completely restored, and just six weeks later, it has been brought back to its former splendour.

2015 Z06 CONVERTIBLE

The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was the most awarded car of the year in 2014. For 2015, the introduction of the supercharged Corvette Z06, an all-new eight-speed automatic, the Performance Data Recorder, and OnStar with 4G LTE led the roster of new production cars.

The performance of the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 establishes it as one of the most capable supercars on the market – and one of the few to achieve sub-3-second 0-60 performance and a sub-11-second quarter-mile time.

It accelerates from a rest to 60 mph in only 2.95 seconds when equipped with the all-new, available eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission – and achieves it in 3.2 seconds with the standard seven-speed manual transmission. A quarter-mile sprint takes just 10.95 seconds with the eight-speed automatic and 11.2 seconds with the seven-speed manual.

For the first time since 1963, the Z06 is also offered in coupe and convertible models. In fact, building a modern Z06 Convertible was only enabled by recent technological advancements, according to Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter: “Simply put, until recently it was not possible to create an open-roof structure strong enough to meet Corvette’s highest performance levels. It required advancements in computer-aided engineering, metallurgy and manufacturing – many of which did not exist five years ago – to make a frame strong enough for a Z06 Convertible.”

Paul Stanley, frontman for KISS, was invited to work with Chevrolet designers to personalize a 2015 Corvette Stingray coupe, creating the perfect instrument that reflects Stanley’s creativity applied to America’s sports car.

Stanley selected the exterior scheme, with a unique candy red hue offset with Midnight Glaze Silver paint treatment on the roof, rear hatch, spoiler, outside mirrors, and the front grille. He also helped select unique interior enhancements, including quilted parchment leather seats, along with additional parchment leather accents in the Jet Black cabin.

Stanley’s Stingray features the available Z51 Performance Package, which includes a dry-sump oiling system, electronic limited-slip differential, larger front brakes, and a cooling package for the differential and transmission. The car rolls on Chevrolet Accessories forged aluminum wheels – 19-inch front/20-inch rear – in Carbon Flash Metallic. They use Michelin P245/35ZR19 tires in front and P285/30ZR20 tires in the rear.

Power comes from the 6.2L Gen V LT1 engine, rated at 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, with the available performance exhaust system.

Paul Stanley, the renowned frontman of the hard rock band KISS, had the opportunity to collaborate with the designers at Chevrolet and put his creative vision into action. The result was a stunningly customized 2015 Corvette Stingray coupe, a perfect synthesis of American muscle car spirit and Stanley's individualistic style.

Along with the all-new powertrain, the classic Corvette features a custom hood vent inspired by the current Stingray, along with restyled front fender vents and 18-inch wheels that emulate the design of the 15-inch rally wheels originally offered in 1971.

Johnson selected a unique silver-blue exterior color, with After Midnight dark silver trim accents and Satin Dark Android graphic accents. Inside, Johnson selected original-style bucket seats trimmed in black leather with suede inserts, a suede-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel, and carbon fiber accents.

HEARTLAND CUSTOM’S “SPEC” 1958

Jeff Page, Heartland Customs, developed what he calls a “spec” format for a C1 resto-mod. Since it was evident that many features requested by customers tend to fall into similar categories, why not make a standard set of equipment that can be built in series? There are variations from car to car, but so many repeats. This 1958 was, in effect, his marketing tool. Looks good.
