The car rental company began in Chicago with a dozen Model T Ford cars. Walter Jacobs, who at the time was only 22 years old, founded the company. Mr. Jacobs sold the company to John D Hertz in 1923. It became a subsidiary of his Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company. First of all, he named it "Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System."
