C2 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Cars by Chevrolet for Sale at Mecum Auction 2022 Kissimmee

At this time there are 406 Corvettes that will be for sale at the Mecum Auction Kissimmee 2022. Today on our blog we are looking at the C2 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Cars by Chevrolet that will be availble for sale.

We are looking at the Vette Vues blog at the C2 Corvettes for sale at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee in Florida, January 5-16, 2022, and taking a look at a few of the unique ones.

Once again, at the end of this blog post, we have two spreadsheets.  One has the C2 Corvettes sorted by year, and the other spreadsheet has them sorted by the date they will cross the auction block. (As of January 6, 2022)

We have already covered perhaps the most valuable C2 Corvette at the auction.  This Corvette will likely be the highest bid/sold Corvette with an estimated value of $3,000,000 – $3,500,000.  Lot F157 is the 1963 ZO6 Gulf One:

The next Corvette we want to look at is Lot  F153.1, a 1963 ZO6 Corvette:

F153.1 1963 ZO6 Fuelie Corvette for Sale
F153.1 1963 ZO6 Fuelie Corvette for Sale

SOLD: $$605,000.

The next Corvette we want to look at is lot  F153.1, a ZO6 Fuelie Corvette estimated at $500,000 – $600,000. This 1963 Corvette Benchmark Split Window Coupe has the 327-360 hp, four-speed, numbers matching original motor, and factory original body/trim tag. The split window only has 39,000 actual miles.

The Riverside Red was a popular color that year, with 4,612 painted that color out of the 21,513 Corvettes produced. The  Riverside Red paint is set off with white racing stripes and a black interior. The delivering dealer added the racing stripes and chrome wheels when new.

This is an original unmolested car, including paint, interior, window glass, motor, transmission, and rear end.

We learn from the Pro-Team Corvette’s website that:

“It has a Bloomington Gold Certification, Survivor, and Benchmark honors, the latter being the most important of all to the demanding collector. Benchmark Certification recognizes each recipient as not only unrestored—a quality recognized in Survivor judging—but also that it remains in showroom condition, exactly as it was upon delivery from the factory, with the exception of aging. These qualities make it the perfect source of reference for a top-quality restoration of a like car, ergo the term “Benchmark.” Benchmark Certification is only awarded to cars that have achieved both Gold and Survivor on the same weekend and qualify in all four Survivor categories. Benchmark is, by definition, the most important distinction in the entire Corvette judging regime, one awarded to fewer than 228 Corvettes (1953-1972) as of this writing—including this jewel, of which only 14 of them were in 1963! Recent affirmation by CCAS, LLC/Al Grenning as to the legitimacy and originality of the cylinder case (engine block), engine stamp pad, and stamping. The Bloomington Gold Benchmark award in 2013 includes Gold and Survivor certification awards. To date, this is one of less than 200 Corvettes in the world that can lay claim to this award. It also has multiple NCRS certifications, including Top Flight (2002) and Bowtie (2000), and includes the NCRS confirmation of the existence of judging awards (six). “

This Z06 was used by G.M. in their re-launch of the 2001 Z06 and is pictured in the 2001 Z06 sales brochure.

The Z06 special performance option appeared on only 199 Corvettes and cost $1,818.45, almost 50% of the base price.

This option included special heavy-duty metallic brakes with finned drums and cooling fans, a special one-year-only master cylinder, and a special heavy-duty suspension. They are optioned with power brakes, 3.70 posi, Z06 heavy-duty metallic brakes with finned drums and air scoops, Z06 special heavy-duty suspension, AM/FM radio, fuel injection, two sets of wheels/tires, and 1963 hubcaps (NOS).

It has almost all the factory-type components, including the spare, jack, jack tools, K.O. wheel hammer, clear floor mats, shocks, seat belts, washer system, shifter, shielding, air cleaner, alternator, idler pulley, distributor, heads, F.I. unit, F.I. fuel filter, seven leaf spring, all dated shocks, front sway bar, Z06 dual master cylinder, ball joints, hoses, hose clamps, exhaust heat shields, radiator, expansion tank, finned balancer, starter, gas door assembly, Bowtie mirror, glove box door, cookie tin hood, warranty book, owners manual, sales brochure, and T-3 headlights.

It is documented with the dealer invoice, letters from G.M., owners manual packet, a plaque from Corvette Museum, Bloomington/NCRS awards, certificates, judging sheets, owners card, patch, pin, keys, G.M. 2001 Z06 re-launch brochure (with this car), receipts dating back to 1963, Z06 survey, photos of the original owner of 43 years, fuel fill-up log, maintenance log, and 1963 license plates.

The production date is July 24th, 1963, and it was delivered new by Jack Schwirtz Chevrolet in Elizabeth, IL (dealer code 591 in zone 61) per the official NCRS/GM Shipping Data Records (SDR).

Our next Corvette is an Ermine White 1964 Tanker and is one of 38 produced. It is offered at No Reserve and is part of the Don Salmon Collection, and has the 327/375 HP fuel-injected engine with a 4-speed transmission.

Mecum’s site explains, “It’s also about as close to a Z06 as Chevrolet offered in 1964. The competition-oriented Z06 option group was discontinued after its debut with the next-generation Corvette in 1963, but most of the speed equipment that had been packaged under the Z06 umbrella was available for 1964 with their own individual RPO numbers. This car, for example, has the Z06’s L84 fuel-injected version of the 327 CI V-8, backed here by a 4-speed manual transmission and a Positraction rear end with 4.11 gears. The knock-off wheels, RPO P48, were another Z06 item, as was the 36.5-gallon fuel tank, RPO N03. It’s that big gas tank that makes this car so rare, as only 38 Corvette coupes were so equipped, earning them the “tanker” nickname.”

This tanker Corvette earned an NCRS Top Flight award in 2013, scoring 97.5 out of a possible 100 points.

Lot S237 1966 L88 Pilot Line Corvette

Lot S237 Pedro Rodriguez 1966 L88 Pilot Line Corvette
Lot S237 Pedro Rodriguez 1966 L88 Pilot Line Corvette – Photo Credit Mecum Auction

Next, we look at the Pedro Rodriguez 1966 L88 Pilot Line Corvette. We learn from the Mecum Auction website that it is known inside Chevrolet as the “Pedro Rodriguez L88” and that this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe was purpose-built by the Chevrolet Engineering Center for Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team as a field test car to assess the durability of aluminum cylinder heads for the 427 CI V-8 and other related racing components in the March 1966 Sebring 12 Hours of Endurance race.

This Corvette is one of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s specially designated “A” projects. Chevrolet Engineering Center prepared it “purpose-built to do one thing…to win races”, quoting Dick Guldstrand.

Also known as one of the “Four Kings,” the car was commissioned for the 1966 12 Hours of Sebring. Famous NART driver Pedro Rodriguez ordered the car. At the last minute, Rodriquez chose a Ferrari to race at Sebring.

After Sebring, DonYenko sold the car to Yenko teammate Harold Whims. Many unique features were employed during the build to create this rare L-88 pilot prototype.

The car was delivered to MacGrotty Chevrolet in Flushing, NY with the following options: 1966 Cold Air Box Hood, Heavy Duty 427 Development L88 engine, 36.5-gallon gas tank (retains its original factory tank), Heavy-Duty M22 ‘’Rock Crusher’’ 4-speed, Heavy Duty J56 brake equipment, heater & radio delete, transistorized ignition, shoulder harness belts, and telescopic steering wheel. A racecar for its entire existence, this car has extensive owner history and has raced at tracks including Virginia International Raceway, Daytona, Talladega, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Road Atlanta, Marlboro, Huntsville, Cumberland, and Summit Point.

This has a long list of features:

  • The Pedro Rodriguez/NART 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Development L88
  • The first known purpose-built Corvette factory race car resulting from a collaboration between GM’s Zora Arkus-Duntov and Luigi Chinetti of NART
  • The 1966 12 Hours of Sebring field test car for the aluminum cylinder heads dated January 5 and 13, 1966 on the 427 engine
  • One of the ‘Four Kings’, heavy-duty purpose-built 1966 Corvette factory race cars, the second 1966 Corvette to receive the fresh air intake hood and the first built with shoulder harness seat belts
  • Structural features for weight savings performed by the Chevrolet Engineering Center, in addition to the installation of a Dyno ‘seasoned’ 427 L88
  • After a Sunday afternoon shakedown drive at the GM Tech Center by Zora Duntov, the car was shipped to New York for loading on the NART transport headed to Sebring.
  • Because of behind-the-scenes events at Sebring, Luigi Chinetti decided to have Pedro Rodriguez and Mario Andretti drive the Ferrari 365 P2 they raced at the 1966 Daytona 24 Hours.
  • Extensive race history with Race Log Books
  • Original engine compartment photo and others from racer Harold Whims, in addition to some of his trophies
  • Removed pieces used on this car by later racers have been maintained, with photo documentation.
  • Any unusable factory panels for restoration have been maintained for further provenance, and all necessary parts for restoration are NOS and OEM, including certain “Pilot Line” parts.
  • Corporate sponsorship by Union 76
  • Competed at Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Charlotte Motor Raceway, Virginia International Raceway, Marlboro Motor Raceway and Road Atlanta
  • 2020 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Grand Sport Trophy winner, judged by Derek Bell and Johnny Rutherford and presented by Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, for the show’s Most Historically Significant GM Competition Car, trophy not included
  • 2020 Bloomington Gold Show ‘Cars of Zora’
  • 2016 Bloomington Gold Show ‘Gold Collection’
  • 2016 Bloomington Gold Show/Charlotte Gold Collection
  • 2016 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Corvette Legends Invitational
  • 2014 Corvettes at Carlisle Race Car Reunion

  • A85 shoulder belts
  • C48 heater and defroster delete
  • F41 special front and rear suspension
  • G81 Positraction rear axle
  • J50 power brakes
  • J56 heavy-duty brake equipment
  • K66 transistorized ignition
  • Heavy duty 427/430 HP L88 engine with aluminum cylinder heads
  • M22 4-speed heavy-duty manual transmission
  • N03 36-gallon gas tank (retains its original factory tank)
  • N32 teakwood steering wheel
