C4 Corvette Historical Overview - an Iconic American Sport Car The fourth iteration of Chevrolet's renowned Corvette sports car, the C4, was produced from 1983 to 1996. The total number of C4 Corvettes was 358,180 units. Among the improved features of this model was the return of the convertible option, as well as the inclusion of higher-performance engines, like the 375 hp LT5 found in the ZR-1. On March 1990, the ZR-1 established a new benchmark for the highest land speed achieved over a 24-hour and 5,000-mile duration by achieving a speed of 175 mph. Unfortunately, the introduction of a completely new chassis, modernized design, and other modifications resulted in increased pricing and reduced sales.
