In this blog, we look at our February 2008 issue of Vette Vues Magazine‘s coverage of the September Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix 2007. We also have some photos of the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix 2007 Corvette ZO6 Pace Car.
It is interesting to be reminded that it had not been since 2001 that the racing on public roads of the island had taken place. Roger Penske and multiple corporate sponsors and the cities of Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, Canada worked together to accomplish this return.
“We are proud that the Corvette — America’s truly iconic sports car — will have such a strong presence as the Official Vehicle of the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix,” said Corvette Marketing Manager Gary Claudio. “It is only fitting that one of Detroit’s most recognizable symbols is deeply involved in the return of world-class auto racing to the Motor City — the home of both Corvette and General Motors.”
The race took two hours and 45 minutes on the 2-miles Belle Isle Park temporary street circuit. Jan Magnussen and Johnny O’Connell had a GT1 class victory in the inaugural Detroit Sports Car Challenge at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. Scoring their third win of the season in the NO. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R.
