Kentucky Transportation History:
If you are traveling through Kentucky starting August 28, 2017 and running through the Spring of 2018, there will be a unique exhibit at the National Corvette Museum. Kentucky will Celebrate 225 Years of Transportation. The exhibit will trace the history of transportation in Kentucky, featuring artifacts like the Mammoth Cave stagecoach, numerous bicycles from the Kentucky Wheelmen, and L&N Railroad archive items.
This year Kentucky celebrates a milestone anniversary – it has been 225 years since its admittance as a state into the Union. Originally a part of Virginia, “the Kentucky County” became the 15th state on June 1, 1792. To celebrate, the National Corvette Museum is hosting a special exhibit, ‘Kentucky: 225 Years on the Move’ opening August 28, 2017, and running through Spring, 2018. The exhibit will trace the history of transportation in Kentucky, featuring artifacts like the Mammoth Cave stagecoach, numerous bicycles from the Kentucky Wheelmen, and L&N Railroad archive items.
“The exhibit breaks history down into three 75-year increments and we highlight transportation on land, air and water,” said Derek Moore, Curator for the National Corvette Museum. “Corvette plays a significant role in the automotive industry for Kentucky, so we thought an exhibit that focused on transportation would be a great fit.”
Artifacts for the exhibit will be on loan from other museums, organizations and even private individuals including Kentucky’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles, who is loaning his 1935 Allis-Chalmers WC tractor. “Agriculture has played an important role for Kentucky since the earliest beginnings,” said Quarles. “This tractor represents the role of the family farm, which continues to be a backbone of rural Kentucky today.”
